Markdown Anything (Chrome extension)
Last updated: June 17, 2026
This policy describes how the Markdown Anything browser extension ("Extension") handles information when you use it.
By using the Extension, you agree to this policy.
What the Extension does
The Extension converts the active webpage, screenshots, short videos (YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Instagram Reels,
Facebook Reels), and locally uploaded files (PDF, DOCX, TXT, etc.) into AI-ready markdown prompts. Page, image,
and video conversions are powered by AI models via
OpenRouter using your own API key.
File conversions (PDF, DOCX, TXT, MD, CSV) are performed entirely inside your browser and no data is sent to any server.
Data we process
- Page content — Text and structure extracted from the active tab when you use the Page or Image mode, so the AI model can generate a relevant markdown prompt.
- Screenshots — A JPEG capture of the visible tab, or an image you right-clicked, sent to OpenRouter when you use Image mode.
- Video frames — A small number of JPEG frames (up to 6) sampled from the current video and sent to OpenRouter when you use Video mode.
- Uploaded files — Files you drop into the File tab are read and converted locally in your browser. Their content is never uploaded to any server.
- OpenRouter API key — If you save a key in Settings, it is stored locally in your browser using Chrome's
chrome.storage.local and is never transmitted anywhere other than directly to OpenRouter on your behalf.
- Settings and last results — Your preferences (model choice, quality settings, etc.) and the most recent generated output per modality are stored locally in Chrome storage so they persist between popup sessions.
Third parties
When you use Page, Image, or Video mode, the Extension sends the captured content and your API key to
OpenRouter's servers to generate a response.
OpenRouter's handling of data is governed by their own terms and privacy policy. We do not control OpenRouter's infrastructure.
No other third-party services receive your data.
What we do not do
- We do not collect, store, or transmit any data to our own servers — there are none.
- We do not sell your data.
- We do not use your data for advertising, analytics, or any purpose unrelated to generating your markdown output.
- The Extension does not require you to create an account with us.
Permissions
The Extension requests only the permissions required to function:
- activeTab / scripting — To read the current page's content or capture a screenshot when you click Generate.
- storage — To save your API key, settings, and last results locally in your browser.
- contextMenus — To add a right-click option for converting a page or image directly.
- Host permissions (OpenRouter, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and their CDNs) — To call the OpenRouter API and to read video content on supported short-video platforms.
Children
The Extension is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes
We may update this policy. The "Last updated" date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
